Not so much of a scam, but maybe unwise or unaware player.

Kamadan:

Party Search:
WTS Moa Eggs 15k each.

I inquired him, playing clueless, on why they were so expensive.
Other player says that they are VERY RARE and are needed to get the Rare Black Moa Chick.
To confirm, I ask are the eggs or the Moa rare?
Other player says both are rare to obtain.
I nod to myself and proceed to tell him that these "rare" eggs are found for free outside of Ft Ranik and anyone could go there and rerun and pickup as many as they like.
Other player responds with a "What are you talking about?" and then stops responding to me. Minute later his party search sale disappears.

A person in fow armor and chaos gloves wants to buy my mini kuunavang. So instead of 100k + the ecto it's 100g with the ecto.

Guess the trick to getting expensive items is cheating everyone out of their items.

I think the most pathetic scam I've seen was a guy in Droknars Forge who advertised this offer:
"GIVE ME YOUR EXPENSIVE WEAPONS AND I'LL DUPE THEM FOR YOU!"

The most pathetic period is a "scam" I pulled myself. I was bored and started advertising that:
"SCAM! GIVE ME 5K AND I'LL SCAM YOU! 100% SUCCESS! NO NOOBS!"
That was pathetic, but it what made it truly pathetic was that I
a) got offers from people who wanted to give me 5K to scam them, and
b) dozens of upset whispers from people that they'd report me for scamming.

This was a good while ago before factions was out:

I found a Sup vigor rune one day and decided to salvage it before ID-ing it, me totally happy for getting a Sup Vig, but I intended to sell it unidentified to make it a bit more valuable.

so i went to Droks and put this in the trade chat:
"WTS Unidentified Rune, 35k" (fair price at that time)

surely enough people were starting to call me a scammer, telling me it could be any superior rune.

I keep insisting it's fair, you can tell by the rune's Icon. this went on for about 30 mins until I noticed my SUBLIME blunder of not putting VIGOR in the trade chat.

to add insult to injury, one guy whispers me he'll buy it for 30k+ 1ecto. Fair enough, I was getting annoyed with trade spam (I despise vending).

you traded XXXX an Superior Rune
XXXX traded you an Ecto and 30g.

.........

Here's a good one, I was in Kamadan selling my stygian reaver and this guy PMs, I'll buy 100k+50ectos (more than i was selling), then he makes me switch dists to meet him, a naked wammo, says do you remember that dupe trick there was a few months ago, I was like yeah yeah and so he takes me outside to see the axe then says: I have to make sure that axe isn't duped, duped items can't be dropped and so he asks me to follow him. That's where I insult him and leave.

I found it very pathetic.

The End.

Hello all! I'm new in the forums (but a few weeks old in the auction section) and I'd like to share my "almost-got-scammed" story with you.

I just recently got this game last Christmas of 2007 as a gift to myself (along with factions, nightfall, and eye of the north). Being new, I decided to move along the storyline of Prophecies first, which led me to finishing Eye of the North by a small detour.

Anyway, just today, I decided to continue on the Prophecies storyline and I got to the mission in Desperate Dunes, part of the ascension quest. I was tired and I didn't really want to get lost in the desert again, plus I was eating lunch at the time, so I hired this "mission runner" who was shouting there. I'll keep his name secret for now, you'll learn why. All I can tell you is his name consists of "Mr" followed by a Mexican type of food.

After I hired him, he asked for the first half of the payment before the start of the mission, which I gave him. We chatted a bit and talked about stuff as he started the mission.

At the beginning of the mission, I asked him if he could finish it alone, and he reassured me that he can. He went off (this mission involves protecting a ghost hero) and died running. I cheered for him because I wasn't really in a hurry to finish the mission and told him that he could do it, then we had a few laughs.

After a few unsuccessful attempts, he confessed to me that he was really going to scam me, but he just couldn't because he thought I was "cool" and he had a change of heart. He returned me my money and I just told him it's fine and thanked him for returning my gold, then he left.

I guess my experience from other games holds true here as well, that if you're nice and polite to people, they'll have a harder time trying to do bad things to you

Don't hold your breath.

You were lucky you found a "nice" scammer. But if you think that being nice and polite will make scammers have a harder time scamming you, then you are wrong.

So, you didn't get scammed out of your gold, you still got scammed out of your time.

Question though. Have you actually ever tried the Dunes of Despair mission before this?

A good one I saw the other day was a guy advertising selling a torment shield for 100k+30ectos or willing to trade for 25 Lunar Tokens. It was also interesting enough another guy in LA was spamming selling 25 Lunar tokens for 100k. I messaged the seller of the shield since by chance I still had some lunar tokens of my own sitting around and for those who don't know they are of no value unless by chance the lunar fortune collector shows up again and even then not worth near 100k. So he constantly refuses to do the trade then stops answering then I talk to the other guy who was selling the tokens for 100k and hes like its a good deal you should buy them and I told him he should trade them to that guy for the torment shield he can make big money. The guy then precedes to tell me some BS about how he already traded 25 to that guy for 5 superior vigors so I told him he should trade me the vigors for my 25 tokens since according to him they are worth 100k far more than 25 tokens. He refuses but insist I should buy his tokens since I can get such a sweet deal on the torment shield. It obviously was 2 friends working together and anyone that actually bought the tokens from the one would be greatly disappointed when the guy with the shield ignored them.

Default WHAT A GREAT THREAD and at the perfect time...

I JUST had it happen to me again...like 30 minutes ago and I stumbled on this thread in my search for a Ceratadon Mini...

"Would you let me take a screenshot of your Mini Panda out on the map?" was the polite request by PM as I logged in for the afternoon. I should have known when he wanted me to come to Kamadan after I guested him to my guild hall that something was awry....

Once on the map he followed with the request that I drop it on ground so he could {printscreen} it....

I will paraphrase my response as not to offend anyone...

"DO YOU #$%^ing think im a $%*#ing R3T4RD?????" (or something like that but not as classy), I screamed at him in chat.

He replied with all the lame things one might expect - "I dont want it, I just want the screenshot of the writing", "I'm way over here. How could I get there that fast?" on ad nauseum...

I really dont know why I stayed the several minutes and tried to explain that this was a REALLY lame scamming tactic and that there was no way in the underworld that I would ever do something so idiotic. But i did...

He then asked, after continued denial of his TRUE motives, "Would you give me 5 ectos toward my obsidian armor?"

Something inside my head popped (really I felt it) and I suddenly smelled pancakes for some reason. I feared that I was having a stroke and got the heck out of there.

A few minutes later once the stroke symptoms had passesd I messsaged him and asked that he please remove me from his friend list and NEVER to contact me again.

He replied, "I will remove you from my list when you give me 30 ectos."

IGNORED and FLAMED like Chicago in 1871. I'm not kidding guys, ALL decency and tact flew out the window (I know and I'm always such a calm nice guy...)

mod Edit: Name removed, we don't allow names to be posted

Thanks for making this thread.

Regards,
Sang
